About Chimoyo Game Ranch
Whether proceeding from Ohrigstad via the Abel Erasmus pass and Strijdom-tunnel or via the magnificent Makgoba´s Kloof and Tzaneen, one cannot suppress the feeling that this area is truly one of the few remaining hunting paradises in Africa. One hundred and twenty years ago, it posed the last wild and uninhabited frontier in South Africa where the big five still roamed free and in numbers. This is also where hundreds of hunters, gold diggers, transporters and fortune seekers met an untimely end, either at the hand of disease, wild animal, or fellow man. Although a bit more civilized today, your heart beat automatically accelerates when completing the last 25 kilometres to Chimoyo Game Ranch on the dirt road fringed by untamed African bush on both sides.
Chimoyo Game Ranch is registered with the Department of Economic Affairs, Environment and Tourism (DEEAT) as an exempted ranch which means that hunting can be conducted year round. We are also proud members of Wildlife Ranching South Africa and the South African Hunting and Game Conservation Associations. All hunting on Chimoyo is conducted according to the highest ethical norms and standards as prescribed by these organizations. The wildlife, as well as the habitat is managed according to latest scientific principles in order to conserve the eco-system and intricate interrelationship between species on a sustainable basis. A positive outcome of our ongoing efforts to improve the available habitat is annually expanding trophy and venison quotas, both in terms of quantity and quality.
Trophy quality is of utmost importance; Chimoyo’s annual hunting quota and progeny emanates from top quality breeding stock especially in the case of the African buffalo and sable antelope.
Landscape
Chimoyo Game Ranch is approximately 40 kilometres east of the massive peaks of northern Drakensberg, offering you the most spectacular sunsets over Southern Africa's largest and highest mountain range. To the north it is bordered by a series of low hills, the Murchison Range, named after an old prospector by that name.
Depending on the rainfall and time of year, the bush can be quite thick as is evident from some of these pictures. This provides cover for both hunter and prey making Chimoyo Game Ranch a walk and stalk destination par-excellence! Shooting distances are mostly within the 50-150 metre range and very seldom in excess 200 metres. Please keep this in mind when preparing for your hunt.
Topographically, Chimoyo Hunting Game Ranch provides the hunter with typical lowveld bush at an altitude ranging between 500m and 650m above sea level, progressively falling away to the Moçambican coast approximately 300 kilometres further east.
